The Truth About 75

Proposition 75, like Prop. 226, a similar initiative on the ballot in 1998, slaps new government restrictions on teachers, nurses, firefighters and police - an no one else, not the Governor's corporate campaign contributors, not big tobacco, oil or drug companies, and not the guys bankrolling the measure. By creating a new set of restrictions on political activity for workers, these big business heavy weights aim to silence workers and increase their grip on our government, making it easier for the Governor to pass his dangerous agenda.

Prop. 75 was orchestrated largely by Joel Fox, a top Schwarzenegger advisor and head of both the governor's campaign committee and a coalition of large corporations and wealthy CEOs called SBAC PAC. Fox ensured the campaign committee gathered the signatures for Prop. 75 while raising the money to fund the effort from his big business pals including CEOs Robin Arkley and Frank Baxter, also a founding member of the ultra right-wing fringe group Club for Growth.

Fox also tapped Lewis Uhler, a long time corporate advocate, to be the lead sponsor for the measure. Uhler is a known right-wing activist, former John Birch Society member, and anti-union advocate. Uhler told The San Francisco Chronicle Prop. 75 was designed to target teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and other public workers because of their political activity. Uhler also said the measure would "be a boon to our control over governmental activities."

In the last few months Uhler's group has tried to hide the names of donors from voters by funneling contributions through Fox's SBAC, and more recently by changing their committee name three times.
